Lesson 5

Verbal Sentence

The Verbal Sentence or الجُملَة الفِعلِيَّة (Al-jumla al-fi’liyyah) is a sentence that begins with a verb.

The verb is similar to the English verb, but has 3 tenses:

1. Past فِعل مَاضٍ (fi’lun maḍin)

2. Present فِعل مُضَارع (fi’lun muḍāri’in)

3. Command tense فِعل أَمر (fi’lu amrin)

The future tense is shown by adding the س or the word سَوفَ before the present tense verb. For example:

سَأذهَبُ

I will go

سَوفَ نَلعَبُ

We will play

سَأقرَأُ

I will read

Now let’s look at some examples of verbal sentences,

ذَهَبَ الطَّبِيبُ إِلَى المُستَشفى

The doctor went to the hospital

رَجَعَ مُحَمَّدٌ مِنَ المَدرَسةِ

Muhammad returned from the school

أدرُسُ في بريطانيا

Verb-Subject Agreement

In a verbal sentence, the verb agrees with the subject in gender and not always in number. If the subject is dual or plural, the verb will still be singular.

ذَهَبَ الطُّلَّابُ

The students left / went
